Hanging Dog Recreation Area
This is a lake area with plenty of boating and watersports activities available, but no swimming. In the Hanging Dog area, there are several opportunities for mountain biking. Hike or ride your mountain bike on the moderately-difficult Ramsey Bluff Mountain Biking System that provides 8 miles of trails. It's just a 25 minute drive from the Happy Hytte!

Jackrabbit Mountain Recreation Area
At Jackrabbit Mountain Recreation Area, a designated swimming area and sandy beach are surrounded by picnic tables on a large grassy lawn. A picnic pavilion offers group picnicking with views of the lake. A short trail connects the campground and beach. The lake is filled with a bounty of fish ranging from spotted, white and striped bass to catfish, and sun-fish. 45 minutes away.

West Tubing Company
A small family owned tubing company that is a very family friendly adventure. It's an easy float with no rocky bends to push through. They also have a bar and sometimes have a guy manning a grill with burgers and dogs. We go every summer!

Helen, Ga
This is that little Bavarian town you've heard so much about! We start with tubing, have schnitzel for lunch, and wrap up with shopping or the coaster! One hour away.

Vogel State Park
Wear your swimsuit and enjoy the beach on the lake, bring a picnic lunch, rent a paddle boat, take the trail to the waterfall or hike up into the mountain. So much to do! 40 minutes from the cabin.

Amicalola State Park
This waterfall is amazing, but the stairs to the bottom are no joke! If you need a stroller friendly or easier path look for the ADA parking area and walk from there- it's still a beautiful view. One hour from the hytte.

Tallulah Gorge
One of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S., Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. Visitors can hike rim trails to several overlooks, or they can obtain a permit to hike to the gorge floor (100 per day, not available during water releases). A suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls. Definitely a challenging and amazing day trip! Pets not allowed down in the gorge. We haven't done this yet, but it's on our list for the next trip. 1.5 hours from the cabin.

Black Rock Mountain
As Georgia's highest elevation in a state park, the weather is always a little bit cooler. Great hike on a hot summer day! There are four trails, and an easy hike around the lake, plus the summit visitor center has an amazing view. 1.5 Hours from our hytte.

Brasstown Bald
The Brasstown Bald Visitors Center sits atop Georgia's highest mountain at 4,784 feet above sea level. Surrounded by the Chattahoochee - Oconee National Forest, its cloud level observation deck offers stunning 360-degree views of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and valleys. On a clear day, one can see four states. Take the tram up to the top and the hike is much easier on the way back down. This is another hike that can be downright chilly! You can really feel the temperature change at the lookout. A 45 minute drive from the hytte.

Lake Ocoee
Rent a pontoon or fishing boat for 4 or 8 hours. Bring a cooler and just relax, this lake is remote and is in the Cherokee National Forrest, so you aren't boating through a lake town. It's just stunning. This is only 30-40 minutes from the hytte.

Tanasi trail system. Boasting more than 20 miles of trails, this trail system has it all. From a hike with history along the 2.4 mile restored segment of the Old Copper Road Trail, or an easy 1 mile stroll around the Olympic course at the location of the recently burned down Whitewater Center to a screaming 1.5 mile mountain bike ride on the Thunder Rock Express, mountain bikers and hikers alike will be challenged and rewarded when they reach the top of Bear Paw Loop and travel Chestnut Mountain Trail to sites that overlook the site of the former Whitewater Center and the Ocoee River. Some of these trails were closed right after the fire. Check the website to make sure the one you want has reopened. Just a 25 minute drive from the cabin.

Chilhowee Recreation Area
Another great lake day trip. Take the lake loop trail, the Benton Falls trail, or spend the day on the lake's beachfront area. Within the recreation area are approximately 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, and a scenic waterfall. On the drive up to the campground, stop at one of the many observation overlooks to see beautiful mountain settings. Wildlife is abundant in this area, so have your camera ready and tread lightly. This is a 45 minute drive from our hytte.
